Happy Mother’s Day
The smell of pancakes wafting through the house probably isn’t what woke her up. More than likely, the noise of dishes clinking and clanking along with hushed voices probably did the trick.
All she wanted was to sleep in… and now she’s awake probably trying not to count the number of dishes stacking up. “Hopefully, they’ll clean up the mess.” Running through her mind.
The door opens in an ambush-style raid and two tiny faces armed with love and enthusiasm rush in to assault a groggy, sleep deprived, and an eternally grateful lady called mom.
This scene plays out across America today and some variation of it is familiar to us all.
We love our moms. And why wouldn’t we? We tell them our secrets. They listen to our heartaches and problems.
This woman who is part therapist, part magician and part superhero love us unconditionally. AND they always see the best in us… even at our worst.
Yes… they are unicorns. Millions of them all over. Sent here from heaven ahead of you to make your life way better than it could ever be without them.
But do they really want breakfast? And whether the answer is yes or no what else do the really want?
Celebrating Moms
Of course, moms want to be celebrated. But how they want to be celebrated will differ greatly from mom to mom.
Some moms like public recognition. Some moms hate public recognition.
You know your mom or the mother in your life, A.K.A. your wife, better than anyone else.
The point is to not be like everyone else. You have a unicorn of a mom right there. Only you know how to celebrate her.
Whether the moms in your life like breakfast in bed or a trip to the beach or maybe the just like no one to make a fuss about them is not the point.
According to author Brené Brown in her book Daring Greatly… moms want to know you see the effort they make to love you and that you know you are loved.
They really want to know that they matter in your life. So pick up that phone. Call your mom and listen to her for as long as she wants to talk. Or if you are with her today, go for a walk. Talk to her about her with open-ended questions. Then… just listen.
Do all the things that you can do to show her that you hear her and you see the wonderful things that she’s done in your life.
What If I Get It Wrong?
Sure it feels good when you nail getting the right gift. Or saying the right thing. But remember, this species of unicorn love us unconditionally.
You can’t screw this up unless you just don’t try.
Be intentional about being present. Go in airplane mode. Put this blog down and get after making today amazing for them by being with them.
